Why You Need to Wake Before Your Kids

I can hear you all groaning right now…

I know how you feel… As mothers, we are always on the go, always doing something for someone and hardly ever get time for ourselves. Well, that is just the point, my friends. We need time for ourselves each and every day. We need those few moments to restore our soul and feel refreshed. We need to fill up our cups so we can pour out into others.

Before we go any further, I will emphasize that I am not implying we deserve time to ourselves. We are not owed this. I am not a fan of the mainstream self care culture out there – this is not what I’m talking about. I simply mean using the first portion of your day well.

I have gone through many years of late nights, and all night long nursing sessions. I have had seasons where I felt I could never catch up on sleep and would likely always have dirty hair. I have tried many different things to try and get in my quiet time over the years. I have stayed up late, I have tried to get in some time during the mid day nap….

But the thing that I found works best for me is waking up before my children…

Why You Need to Wake Before Your Children JSH

WHY YOU NEED TO WAKE BEFORE YOUR CHILDREN:

1. You Can Start Your Day With Purpose.

We have all been there. When you wait to wake up until after your kids are up, you start the day in reactive mode. It tends to be chaos and inevitably, things go wrong. People don’t know where they put things, who needs to do what, mom hasn’t had her coffee yet…and so on. By waking up a little earlier, you can start your day proactively and intentionally. You choose what time you will wake up, how your morning will go and what will get done. When you start your day with intention- it’s up to you.

2. You Can Have Some Quiet Time.

I don’t know about you, but I NEED quiet time to myself in order to maintain my sanity. I actually crave it. With 8 children at home, and as a homeschooling mom, quiet time is not so easy to get during the day. The only time that I have found the house is truly quiet and peaceful is early in the morning. I can drink a hot cup of coffee, spend some time with the Lord, read a good book, get some work done, check The Simple Home Community …that time is mine.

3. You Can Be Productive.

I have learned that I am far more productive in those early hours of the day. By mid afternoon, my brain feels a bit fried and it is harder to concentrate. I do not do all of my work during the early morning, but if I know I have something that needs my concentration, I can do it before the children wake up. I get more done in far less time when my house is still asleep. After I have had my quiet time and some work time, I tend to tidy up the kitchen or the school room. Everyone is happier when we start the day with those rooms picked up! It is so much easier to for me to take just a few minutes in the morning to clean up, than to try and get that done when the house is going at warped speed.

SEE: 10 Habits Of Highly Effective Homemakers

4. You Can Enjoy an Un-Rushed Morning with Your Children.

Mornings can be hectic for any family – whether you work outside the home or inside the home, whether you send your children to school or teach them at home. However, when I start my day early, with intention, I am more relaxed when I greet my children in the morning. I have filled my cup, both literally and figuratively. They don’t see me frazzled and on edge first thing in the morning. We aren’t trying to find things at the last minute and I am not not reheating my coffee fifteen times. I am able to spend those first moments with my children, un-rushed and thankful for another morning.

Do you wake in the morning before your children? Why or why not?

2018 DaySpring Agenda Planner Sneak Peek!

Ooh, sweet friends…have I got a TREAT for you!

My friends at DaySpring were so generous and sent me a couple of their new 2017-2018 Agendas so I could show you all and give  you a little sneak peek! Many of you know how much of a planner addict I am, so I was beyond thrilled! I have tried more planners than I care to admit, and I use more than I probably should. But this one is seriously a favorite of mine. It’s just so beautiful AND practical!

dayspring agenda coming soon

Just so you are aware, this planner is not yet available to purchase, but it will be very, very soon! UPDATE: They are now available, so hurry and grab yours before they sell out!

Just looking at the cover makes me happy, but there is so much goodness inside! Calendars and note pages and blank pages for doodling…quotes and scripture and inspiration throughout. It is also an 18 MONTH PLANNER, which is just so great. I can’t wait to start using it in July!

I used the vertical weekly layout in a planner for a number of years, but I recently realized I love the horizontal layout because I can use it for so much more than my typical agenda planner. This planner would be great for a prayer or devotional journal because there is so much space to write. I am even thinking I could use this as a homeschool planner and use a separate line for each subject.

dayspring open

If you are anything like me, you’ll be super excited to see all the gorgeous planning stickers in the back of the planner! There are stickers for church, birthdays, school, appointments, vacations, events, games and practices and more, and then tons of blank stickers for you to use as well. I still use washi tape and pretty page markers and all kinds of things, but this planner is gorgeous enough to just let be.

I’ll be showing you how I am using mine and what supplies I am using to decorate very soon, so be on the lookout. You can follow me on Instagram, where I often share planner pictures too.

How We Save Money with Groupon Coupons

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post, but as always all opinions are 100% mine.

As a large family mom, I am all about saving money where and when I can. I go for quality purchases, so they last, but try to save and shop wisely. Over the years, I have learned to forgo the immediate gratification in place of saving up to find the best deal. This doesn’t always happen, but I try my best.

It can also be hard to bring all the kids to the store (although we do have quite the system down) for just a few items. That’s why I do most of my shopping online. I’m still able to shop around for the best deal and use my money wisely. I was so excited to find that Groupon has coupons!! Maybe I was in the dark for awhile, but not anymore. Now before I shop, I regularly check the site for awesome deals.

The Groupon site is extremely simple to use. All you do is enter your zip code in the search bar and it searches for deals in your area like local shops, restaurants, and attractions. There are even coupons for Amazon, Target, Sam’s club, Kohl’s, and several other places that we all love to shop. If you have never used Groupon before, you can even sign up and get $10 off your purchase of $25.

Here are some other great deals I found:

You can even find coupons for dance classes or horseback riding lessons, memberships to warehouse-type stores, and inexpensive groceries online. Groupon coupons aren’t just for special occasions or trips. There are savings for your everyday shopping trips so be sure to check them out before you shop!

Have you ever used Groupon coupons before? What great deals did you find?

Tools to Conquer Your Clutter For Good!

Friends, have I got a treat for you today! You are going to love me…

We talk all the time her about organizing, creating systems and routines. If you have read any of my posts, you know I am a huge fan of planners…paper planners. I also love my lists and I can’t stand clutter. And I know without a doubt that so many of you are the same way! That is why I am so excited to share this with you all today!

If you are tired of wasting precious time shuffling papers and looking for your child’s missing shoe, you’ll love this. You dream of short-cuts to make your life more organized, but is it possible?

I know as a busy mom, I need organization in my life. But not just organization…I need systems and simplicity. I can’t add one more thing to my already busy day…but I would love to streamline it. I would love that perfect planner!

You’ve got great reasons for wanting to be more organized. You want the best for your family. You want to teach your kids to live in calmness, not chaos. You want to be patient without losing your mind in the insanity of so much stuff. And you just want to savor the time you have, instead of running around chasing clutter.
But sometimes it just feels so hard.

Maybe you’ve tried to get more organized before, and failed. Or thought you found the perfect system, only to have it not work for you at all. You’re not alone.

I know what it’s like to feel that getting organized shouldn’t be so hard, and the answer definitely isn’t to keep wasting money on more storage containers or pricey planners, either!
Conquer Your Clutter - Just A Simple Home

This is where it gets exciting!  We have an answer and it’s simple!

What if you could learn from a group of organizing experts all at once — regular people who’ve found practical solutions to their everyday struggles, and want to share their best tips and tactics with you in all the areas you find most challenging?

Because when you have the right info and tools at your fingertips, it’s so much easier. You know which papers to keep (and which should immediately be thrown away). I’d hate for you to miss out, so click HERE to learn more or buy the bundle.

It’s even backed by a full money-back happiness guarantee, so you can know for sure that it’s right for you.

By finding systems and strategies that really work for us, our home and daily life is much calmer than it used to be. It’s made all the difference in the world and I want the same for you and your family.

Make sure to hurry and grab your bundle! Then let’s chat about all the stuff in it!

Productivity Habits to Simplify your Life

Lately I’ve been on a mission to simplify my life as much as possible, as a stay at home mom. I was determined not to go through another year feeling like I could never catch up and yet was missing out on the most important things in my life. I have simplified my cleaning routine, my children’s chores, my meal planning, my schedule and my business. As a stay at home mom and as a mom who works at home, I wear so many hats that it can be overwhelming! I knew I needed to implement some productivity routines to help me balance everything I had going on.

I’ve discovered some productivity habits that really help me to streamline my time and my life in general. I find that by cutting out a lot of the unnecessary, or decreasing how much time I need to spend on my to-dos, I’m left with a lot more time and energy to devote to what I truly love and enjoy doing.

Productivity Habits to Simplify Your Life

Some of the benefits of a streamlined life include:

  • Having the time to spend on activities that you enjoy
  • The ability to bring yourself closer to reaching your ultimate goals
  • Using your time more efficiently and being more productive as a result
  • Feeling more at ease and in control of the direction your life is headed

I know it can be so hard to simplify things as a busy wife and mother. But it is imperative to your health and well being! Think about what you are teaching your children if you are always running around with too much on your plate. They will follow your lead! There are many ways that a streamlined life can have a positive impact on your overall well-being and help you feel more empowered when it comes to your future and achieving your dreams. Here are my top productivity habits for stay at home moms to streamline your life and help you get on the path to feeling empowered!

PRODUCTIVITY HABITS FOR STAY AT HOME MOMS:

SIMPLIFY YOUR POSSESSIONS

Physical clutter almost always turns into mental clutter. If you’re serious about streamlining your life, this is the best place to start. Once you get the clutter under control, it will be a lot easier to simplify the other areas of your life as well.

For more in-depth tips on how to go about simplifying your possessions and decluttering, feel free to read these other posts I’ve written on this topic:

MAKE LISTS FOR EVERYTHING AS YOU GO

I can NOT function without a list! Seriously, I have a list at all times, and I typically have multiple lists. For example, a grocery list. We keep a magnetic notepad on the fridge. As we run out of things, it goes right on the list. The kids are trained to add to that list as they see a need. The family also knows that if it doesn’t get on the list, it doesn’t normally make it in the house! Keeping a running list on the fridge means I don’t have to go rummaging around the house, deciding what we need when it is time to head out the door. This also helps to prevent you from forgetting anything and having to do another trip shortly after.

SET UP ROUTINES

As a busy  mom, I am more about routines than schedules. Routines don’t sound like the most exciting thing to take on, but they really can do wonders for your productivity level. There are homeschool routines, cleaning routines, morning routines, evening routines, Bible study routines, etc. I think the best approach is to pick one type of routine to help you simplify your schedule and some tasks that you need to accomplish. After that one routine is established, then maybe move on to incorporating another into your life.

AUTOMATE

This is a great way to save some time and energy on remembering to pay monthly bills. Automate as many bill payments as possible so you don’t have to fret about paying anything late (or worse, actually paying late and then having to pay for a late fee!). If you are a blogger, figure out how you can automate your social media platforms!

CREATE TO-DO LISTS

I know, lists again! Are you catching a theme here? Be sure to create a to-do list the night before, so you can wake up feeling less frazzled. If I already have my planner filled out and my list made for the day, I know I can wake up in the morning and have my quiet time with the Lord, without distractions. The biggest thing is to figure out your top 3 priority tasks for the day, and try to tackle the most challenging one first. Accomplishing your hardest task of the day will likely keep you motivated enough to keep trucking through your list.

LEARN TO SAY “NO”

If something doesn’t align with your priorities in life, don’t feel guilty about saying “no” to it. You aren’t obligated to do everything in life that is asked of you. You are the keeper of your time, so it is up to you to not let others dictate how you are spending it. When we allow ourselves to become caught up in activities and perceived obligations that we don’t enjoy, it doesn’t leave much time to spend on what we actually want to do.

DELEGATE

I had a number of years where I would run around like a mad woman, trying to do it all. As my kids have gotten older, I have learned that it doesn’t do them any good to see me doing everything. They need to have me at peace as much as realistically possible. I have learned to delegate many household chores to my children. It is good for them! It teaches them life skills, how to run a home, and how to work together. I also keep a small, “honey-do list” for my husband. Not in a nagging way, just a list of things that may need to get done around the house that he tends to be more efficient at.

The holiday season is well underway and that means…Christmas lights! Just kidding…sort of. I do love seeing Christmas lights everywhere, they just make everything so beautiful. My family will drive around for hours just looking at all the wonderul masterpieces people come up with. And isn’t that what this season is about? The wonder, the magic, the excitement…all leading up to that one day. That one day that changed us all for eternity. The Real Reason to celebrate.

Despite knowing the real reason why we celebrate Christmas, so many of us go through it hurried and stress and overwhelmed. We let worry consume us as we try to keep up with the Joneses. We snap at our children when things aren’t in their perfect spot when we have company coming over. We think we need to have the perfect gift for our boss or buy one more platter for our cookie swap.

We have lost the beauty and wonder of all this season offers.

Simplify your Christmas season. Learn how to slow down and enjoy the holidays without stress.

I say we all take a few minutes to go back…pretend we are children…and savor this season…give yourself grace. I have compiled tips from my friends for you that will help you do just that. Overwhelmed to Organized – Free Course

So many moms ask me how I manage to “do it all.” I am a homeschooling mom to eight with two home businesses, and there is always something to do. Well, I have a confession to make. I do not have it all together. Truly, I don’t. I want to be more organized, more focused, more intentional, more this, more that. But I fail daily. I forget that I am not supposed to do it all, that I am supposed to get by on God’s grace alone. I let myself drown under the weight of everything that I have loaded onto my plate. I forget to make myself a priority.

When I get overwhelmed, it can consume me. I may dread getting up in the morning, even though I love my morning quiet time, knowing how full my plate is before I even get out of bed. I can snap at my children, just for being the blessings they are. I might now be the gracious, supportive wife that I should be to my husband. I can freeze up, and not actually accomplish anything when my to do list is never ending. That sends me into a spiral of anxiety that can be hard to break free from.

I know I can’t be the only one to feel this way.

When my daughter was diagnosed with leukemia, my sense of overwhelm went through the roof. Not long after she was diagnosed, my baby was found to have a rare and severe form of epilepsy. If you want to see our journey, follow me on Instagram, as I don’t share much about that here. But, I am telling you this now to show you that I understand overwhelm more than you can imagine.

HOW TO GO FROM OVERWHELMED TO ORGANIZED

You all have probably noticed that my posts lately have focused on simplicity, on doing less and living more. On saturating myself in the Word. Well, after going through a period of complete overwhelm (and affecting my entire family), I decided to make some changes and took some steps to get myself from overwhelmed to organized.  I simplified, I prioritized and I focused.

Now I want to help you. So many of wives and moms have recently shared with me how they’ve also been struggling with being stuck in a place of overwhelm, lack of focus and productivity. It must be the time of year, with school in session and schedules changing. One of the key factors in being able to get yourself from overwhelmed to organized is connecting with other people who have been where you are, can offer heartfelt insight into your situation and also give you the gentle nudge to actually start! Where would we be without community?

So, I took some needed steps back and implemented a few simple steps for myself, and decided to create a new FREE 5-day challenge called “Overwhelmed to Organized” for all my sweet mom friends!

This simple challenge won’t add another thing to your already busy schedule. That would defeat the purpose of this course. This challenge is meant to equip you with simple tasks you can implement and a little accountability, encouragement and support along the way as you gain some organization in your life!

Every day for 5 days you will receive an email delivered straight to your inbox containing a short lesson and an action step to actually implement what you’re learning. You’ll also have access to our member’s only Facebook group to connect and engage with the other wives and moms going through the challenge along with you!

So, if you’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed lately and are ready to gain a little focus and a little organization in your life, join me and sign up for the Overwhelmed to Organized Challenge today!

You can sign up right here and get started right away.

And, don’t forget to invite all your wife/mom friends!

Simple Daily and Weekly Cleaning Schedule with Free Printable

As a wife and busy mom of eight children, my home can easily become a source of overwhelm. When things pile up, I have a hard time starting anything without a bad attitude. If I let a day go by without keeping up with the mess…it is so hard to find the motivation to dig out from under it! Over the years, I have gone through different periods of thought, ranging from “Why bother, it is just going to get messy again” to “That’s it, no one is allowed to breathe until every speck of dirt is cleaned up!

Obviously, neither of these are healthy thoughts…

cleaning-schedule

If you are like me and have a hard time functioning when your house is messy, but you get easily overwhelmed, I may have a solution for you.

I have personally found that creating simple routines I can actually stick to is the key to keeping my house running smoothly.

I have read books, listened to podcasts, read blog posts, scoured Pinterest and more, all in the hopes of stumbling on that magic recipe that will keep my house tidy and organized. Through much trial and error, I learned that I need to simplify as much as possible and create my own routine for running my household.

I created a cleaning routine for my daily and weekly chores that works best for my family. I find that keeping up with these chores gives me the best possible chance at keeping my home tidy. Notice I am not saying perfect…my house will never be in a magazine. I am realistic, and believe in being present for my family and having a well lived in home. However, I feel better knowing that I can open my home to that unexpected neighbor and not feel completely embarrassed.

My children and I each have morning, afternoon and evening chores. Then, once a week we do a more thorough clean of our home prepare for the following week. You can read my top tips for effective homemaking here if you need more inspiration. We probably spend about 15 minutes, three times a day, on our chores and about an hour or two on the weekend. I use the following printable daily and weekly checklist to help me stay on track. My children each have their own checklist… I will have to share that in the future.

***DOWNLOAD HERE***

I hope this checklist helps you simplify your household chores! When you break it down into manageable tasks, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You can stay on top of the mess a little each day.

Take the Overwhelmed to Organized Challenge!

If you are a busy mom and feel like you are constantly juggling too many hats, this challenge is for you!

Do you feel like you can’t catch a break….better yet…a breath? You have so much bottled up inside your heart and mind that you fear you’ll explode? I understand how you feel, I’ve been there more times than I can tell you. For so long I felt like I could never catch up. I was always behind schedule, forgetting important tasks, and feeling like everyone else had it all together. I’ve created this simple course to help you through that feeling of overwhelm. You’ll learn to focus on YOU while creating simple systems to help you get organized and streamline your life.

Transform Your Mornings in 15 Minutes

Ahhh, routines….how I love thee…and how easily I hate thee when you fall apart!

But, such is life, right? We can make all the plans in the world, but this is life and life can be messy and unpredictable.

With the new year right around the corner, I am starting to plan our new schedules and buy the necessary curriculum and sign up for activities and organize my Bible study, and…and…and….you know what I mean. It can easily start to feel chaotic and unorganized, when what I want is just the opposite. I know that if I can just get some routines started, my days will go so much smoother. I will be more peaceful, which means my household will be that much more peaceful. Mom sets the tone of the house.

The 31 Day Declutter Challenge

**UPDATE:

While we aren’t going through this Challenge together right now, you can still grab the printable and all the posts right here.**

Friends, we are going to do something exciting and challenging together…

For the whole month of July, we are going to DECLUTTER our WHOLE house in just a few minutes each day. I don’t know about you, but I have been feeling a little overwhelmed at the amount of stuff in all areas of my home. We used to have a rule that one thing had to leave when another came in, but that has been long since abandoned. Well meaning friends and neighbors have blessed our large family with clothes and accessories, and while I am extremely grateful, I am feeling the walls close in on me a bit. So, I have decided to run a 31 Day Declutter Challenge in the month of July and I would love for you to join me.Declutter Challenge Simple Home

We will be going through each room of our homes and through all those typical spots where clutter naturally appears, in an effort to breathe a little easier. This will be a quick runthrough, designed to get you purging and eliminating all that unused or unloved ‘stuff” in your home. The idea is to keep this SIMPLE and easy to keep up with, not add to your overwhelm. I will not be giving you any projects or huge organizing plans. I have set up a plan and will give you a task each day to follow, along with some added helps for you. I have created some fun printables for you to use if you wish.

A Few Helpful Tips:

  1. As a reminder, this is a quick decluttering. You will not be thoroughly cleaning every area of your home in 10 minutes a day. This is designed to give you a jump on what I hope will inspire you to keep going with me for the rest of the year. I 31 Day Declutter Challengehave some fun things planned for the next few months.
  2. Use a timer to stay focused. Again, we will be spending 10-15 minutes a day decluttering. I do not want you to get overwhelmed while doing this and burn out. Stay with me.
  3. Don’t overthink things as you go through them. If you think too long about whether to get rid of something, you will find it a lot harder to part with. Keep what you love and use, and get rid of the rest.
  4. Keep a donation basket handy. As soon as it is filled, take it to your car and don’t hesitate. It will bless someone else and you will feel better for it.

Over the next few days, I will give you a couple fun printables you can use for the challenge if you wish. I think you will be amazed at what you can accomplish in just a few minutes a day. I know I am eager to get going and see my bathroom counters again!

Feel free to ask me any questions as we go along. I will post each day on the blog as well as on Facebook and Instagram. If you are following along with me, use the hashtag #SimpleHomeChallenge so we can all see what we are accomplishing and get some new inspiration.

I am excited to have you join me in this 31 Day Declutter Challenge!
