Hey mamas! Today I am sharing a little more about what we are using in our homeschool this year. You know that Sonlight has graciously provided our family with a full program that we are using for my oldest. I recently shared our Box Day with you all and had numerous requests to go into more detail on what we received. I had planned on sharing what we are using for our homeschool curriculum this year, per child, so I thought I would start with what we are using for my rising 8th grader first!
If you aren’t familiar with Sonlight, they are a Christian company specializing in literature-based homeschool programs. Most of the books in each core program are secular choices, but the company does have a Christian perspective and worldview. This is our first year using Sonlight and we are really looking forward to it!
Most of you know I have 6 children and 4 of them will be school age this year. It’s possible to combine a variety of ages into one Sonlight level. Although I am planning on using Sonlight primarily for my oldest, there are certain things, like the historical literature, that we can combine with some of my other children. Not only is this a huge timesaver for me, it also means we get to enjoy learning and growing together, which is one of the blessings of homeschooling.
Whole curriculum packages are available, allowing you to purchase materials for an entire year through Sonlight. You can also piece it together according to your needs and wants. Some choose to just buy the Instructor’s Guide and use the library to gather the books they need. I received the whole curriculum package, Level 100.
Sonlight carries a range of packages covering Pre-K to high school levels. Each level contains a core program combining literature, history, and geography together under a theme for the year. Other subjects are available as add-ons if you need them.
Each core program comes with an Instructor’s Guide–a lesson plan completed for you. The Instructor’s Guide has each week’s readings scheduled for you, along with any other assignments for that week.
The Instructor’s Guide appealed to me immensely! I have always made my own lesson plans and enjoyed that, but this year I am adding a student and a new baby into the mix, and really appreciated having it all laid out for me. I loved the idea that I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel or figure everything out on my own. It will save me time and patience! My oldest has also been asking and needing more structure, so this will provide what we needs.

July 8, 2017 at 9:42 amI don’t plan on homeschooling, but my son is autistic so I’m trying to stick to some sort of “school” at home during the summer so his transition to school this fall isn’t so hard. If you stumble upon any good kids websites about science, let me know. Most of the ones we’ve found so far are so outdated. The curriculum looks awesome and a teachers guide sounds amazing!!
