Why and How to Diffuse Essential Oils in Your Home

Why Diffuse Essential Oils

It’s been many years since I have used artificial fragrances in my home. We started using cleaner products many years ago, when our first child was born, and continued learning from there. Now, I get almost an instant headache when I walk into a store or down an aisle filled with fragrances.

I used to love walking into Yankee Candle and browsing for a long time, but now it is hard for me to even walk past the store. If I get into a car with someone who uses those little car fresheners, it literally makes me sick. I am so thankful that I learned relatively early on what artificial fragrances do to your body.

Fragrances are everywhere, and they contain chemicals, hormone disruptors, and even carcinogens. Air fresheners, dryer sheets, perfumes…they are awful for your health and should be avoided whenever possible. Most of the artificial scents you bring into your home are doing more harm to your health than you realize!

With that said, scent is a powerful thing. Scent brings back feelings and emotions, and memories. We like things to smell good, of course. The best way that I have found to still enjoy the scents I love is to diffuse essential oils in my home and in my car. They not only can boost my energy and my mood, but they make my home smell clean and fresh.

How To Diffuse Essential Oils

Diffusing essential oils is really quite simple. You will need a diffuser and essential oils. That’s it! A diffuser is like a small vaporizer. You add water and your chosen essential oils to the diffuser, and turn it on. Most diffuser use vibrations to vaporize your oils and disperse them into small molecules in the air that release your scents, without any heat.

Depending on your diffuser and the manufacturer instructions, you’ll add 5 to 10 drop of essential oils to your diffuser and fill it with water, up to the line. Watch the quick video below to see how simple it is to use a diffuser.

Quick How to Use Your Diffuser

I use a few different Young Living diffusers and a few I bought on Amazon. I have used Young Living for years because I trust the source and know the quality. Using quality essential oils is a must! Please do not go into Walmart and buy their essential oils! Like I stated above, you will likely be doing more harm than good since there are added fillers and scents in these store bought oils.

Diffusing essential oils is one of the simplest ways to enjoy the many benefits of aromatherapy. I have multiple diffusers running every day in our home. If I don’t put on the diffuser in the morning, my kids remind me before we start our school work! And they all make sure the bedtime diffusers are running when they go to bed at night.

Blends I love to Diffuse

  • Peppermint and Lemon for a natural wake me up
  • Frankincense to boost the mood of the household
  • Valor or Stress Away when I feel like the day is getting away from me
  • Grapefruit or Orange oil help when the kids are doing their school work
  • Christmas Spirit to get in that Christmasy mood
  • Lavender, Cedarwood or Peace & Calming to relax everyone at bedtime
  • Thieves blend when I feel our immune systems need some assistance

You are so right, there are so many oils on the market that are not pure! It’s so important to know the manufacturer of the oils. My favorite is either eucalyptus or grapefruit!

You post was perfect timing for me! I’m working a contract job where people use diffusers at their desks or in conference rooms, and it’s wonderful! And I’m with you — I hate those icky, smelly air filters! I need to figure out which diffuser to pick up, and love your combos!

Oh yes, I have plenty of favorites! We use frankincense a lot around here, along with lavender, Roman chamomile, bergamot, and ylang ylang (my second favorite!). I also love a blend of eucalyptus, peppermint, and spearmint!
