10 Children’s Books We Are Loving Right Now

Books are my favorite thing…well, besides the obvious family, Jesus, and coffee. I am and always have been an avid reader and have raised my children as readers. It isn’t that hard to do – I started reading to my children at an early age. We make an adventure out of going to the library or bookstore, I let each younger child pick out a book for us to read before bed, I let my children see me reading books. There are simple ways you can cultivate a love for learning in your home!

We are a homeschool family, so reading is a big part of our day anyway. I am thankful that my children love reading, so it is not a fight to have them read multiple books in a day.

I honestly couldn’t tell you how many books we read in our home on a given week – it’s a lot! I usually share the books I am reading over on Instagram, and then always get messages from moms asking what I have my kids reading! I thought it might be fun to start sharing what we are reading in our home each month; anything from picture books to read alouds. If you would benefit from something like this, make sure to let me know in the comments so I will be sure to share with you monthly!

These are some of the books we have been enjoying lately! Some of them are from new authors you may not have heard before, so make sure and check them out and show them some love!

Children’s Books We Are Loving Right Now:

THANKFUL FRANKIE by Kathleen Cruger

Thankful Frankie is such a sweet little book! This book encourages a habit of gratitude in our children, which is something I feel is commonly lacking in today’s society.

Frankie is a young, adventurous kid who loves materials thing. Frankie has a bag filled with toys and games and other things, and carries it everywhere. One day, the bag is left at the park – and Frankie has a hard time dealing with it.

Frankie learns to be grateful for the little things in life, after losing the bag of belongings. What a lesson to be learned! I was able to talk to my children about the gift of being grateful and not putting our meaning in our possessions. I love that there are discussion prompts at the end of the book, and space for the kids to draw of write about things they are grateful for.

TOMMY THE G.O.A.T. by Hirdesh Matta

My husband was so excited when this book arrived! The Patriots are a big deal in our house. I think part of the reason my husband wants to stay in our home state is his love for our New England sports teams!

Everyone had heard of Tom Brady, right? Tommy the Goat is a story loosely based on Tom Brady’s story. When Tommy was young, he knew he wanted to play football, but his classmates made fun of him for his size and ability. Tommy kept trying and proved that hard work pays off. His perseverance led to him being drafted by the NFL, and leading his team to win multiple Super Bowls! From underdog, to the greatest of all time!

What a great book to read if you want to encourage hard work and perseverance in your children!

CAMI KANGAROO by Stacy C. Bauer

I love when children’s books teach meaningful lessons, don’t you? Cami Kangaroo learns what happens when you eat too many sweets!

I have a few children who love their sweets! We had a fun time reading this book, and were able to talk about healthy nutrition and what happens to our bodies when we continue to eat too much junk!

Cami Kangaroo is rated the number one best seller in children’s first aid books!

A GIRL WITH A CAPE by Amy Logen

As a mom of girls, I loved this book! A Girl With A Cape is a book that teaches the power of being kind every day. We all matter every day, and there are little ways that we can make a difference in the lives of others. As a girl mom, as a Christian mom…what a positive message to instill!

It warmed my heart to hear the conversations that my girls had as a result of reading this book. The cute little cape was taken outside so they all had a turn being “a girl with a cape.”

Amy, the author of A Girl With A Cape, has started a movement with this book…the C.A.P.E. Campaign. The other books in this series follow this one and its’ message. Amy says, “Help Create A Positive Environment by Creating Action with Positive Encouragement; by doing. Put your cape on every day and know that your mission is to do good in this world. The world is counting on you.”

WHEN I PRAY FOR YOU by Matthew Paul Turner

What a beautiful, heartfelt book! I teared up a bit while reading this to my girls, which was unexpected!

When I Pray for You celebrates the love that parents have for their children in their prayers, and shows children how much their parents really care for them. We can all see a bit of our own lives in this story.

My children know that I pray for them, but this was another way of showing them how powerful it is to pray for someone you love.

This is a great book to give to a new mom, if you are searching for a baby shower gift!

SOARING SOREN, THE LAST RHINO, & OY, ELEPHANT by Deborah Stevenson

We all love to see the underdog succeed! Soren is a French Bulldog competing in the sport of dog agility. Everyone thinks he doesn’t stand a chance, but Soren’s belief in himself will prove them wrong!

We laughed out loud reading this book to each other! Talk about surprises!

Joel is a young boy who is going to visit his grandparents in their retirement village. He thinks he is going to have a boring time, until he gets there and finds quite the adventure! His grandparents’ neighbors are a pair of retired circus elephants!

The Last Rhino:

We loved the other two books, so we knew we would love The Last Rhino! This is an early chapter book that was perfect for my second grader. It is an educational book, while still telling a beautifully engaging story that kids will want to read over and over again.
Ayubu is a baby rhino who loses his family due to poachers. He needs the help of friends to survive the harsh African savannah. He learns that he can still find hope and happiness in his life, despite the incredible loss at such a young age.
When Ayubu is a bit older, poachers threaten someone he loves one again. Now that Ayubu is older, can he find the courage to fight his greatest fear?
A story of family and friendship, loss and courage, and above all, hope.

THE LITTLE LABRADOODLE: PUPPY PICKUP DAY by April M. Cox

What a sweet little book! We have read Puppy Pickup Day numerous times already!

This little Labradoodle puppy is waiting to be adopted and worries that his new family won’t love him because he has failed at too many things.

He wanders off and gets lost and need help from new friends in order to make it back in time for puppy pickup day.

This book teaches the importance of being kind, and embracing new friends who can help us. We were also able to talk about how important it is to accept the way God made us and others, and show love no matter what.

All the Little Labradoodle books have underlying themes of:

  • Kindness / Anti-bullying
  • Friendship / Inclusion
  • Overcoming Adversity
  • Building Confidence
  • Use of Imagination
  • Making a Difference

There is also a companion Puppy Pickup Day: Coloring and Activity Book that is not only fun for the kids, but reinforces the beautiful themes from the book.

The coloring book re-enforces the themes of kindness, friendship, courage and self-acceptance from the award-winning picture book, Puppy Pickup Day. The book can be used alone or with the picture book for hours of quality family time. Filled with 48 pages of coloring and activities including counting / math, thinking / reasoning, writing, puzzles and more.

You can also get a signed edition of Puppy Pickup Day that comes with this adorable plush puppy! My daughter was ecstatic to see that her and her puppy had matching “bracelets.”

ZIP’S FIRST DOG SHOW by C.H. Harrison

Zip’s First Dog Show is one of the books in The Pom Tales, a series of educational stories about the adventures of Pomeranians. Along with delightful lessons in each book, there are lists of Words to Know and Essential Questions given in the beginning of the books, and Comprehension Questions at the end.

Zip is a sweet little Pomeranian at his first dog show! He learns that everyone makes mistakes and that it is ok! The most important thing is to keep trying!

HAPPY READING!

Let me know what your family has been enjoying lately! I am always looking for recommendations!
